I'll add that I've found its a waste of time trying to make your APP III/APP IV spell/skill upgrades before hitting 10th level artisan. Why? At level 10, you get replacements for your old reactions that let you "heal" the durability of whatever you're working on, even without waiting for some icon to show. This lets you make pristine isonoid reagent, needed to make pristine sepia dye, which is needed to make pristine sepia dye, which is mandatory to make a tier I (levels 1 through 9) spell or attack skill. Its a major pain, but just get to level 9.999 and you're about an hour from having your spells.
I've found the easiest way to level up as an artisan is to go fishing, fish several stacks of everything, then buy walnut kindling (1 copper each) and packets of spices (1 copper each), now bake all your caught fish, and make jerky out of the sunfish steaks as well. That will get you to 9.999 level artisan.
Now go to Qeynos Harbor, and follow the harbor to the carpenters. In the corner hail Albert Ironforge, and declare your intention to be a scholar. Or have one of your alternates do so, to make spells and trade them by your shared bank. Same thing.
Now go make anything at all, even bake another fish, you NOW ding to 10. Press the K key to open your knowledge icons and click tradeskills. You'll need to go to the last pages (pages 3 and 4) of this list and put the orange icons onto a an open bar of hotkeys. To do THAT, you move your mouse over the bar of hot keys you now have, right-click on a corner, and find the selection "open a new hotbar". A blank one opens, you drag it someplace, shape it into a 6 column by 2 row rectangle, now you can move it off your field of view and tuck it in the space between the bottom of your screen and your eyesight. You're going to use this alot. You can define 6 or so banks of hotkeys like this, although I think you can only have 4 banks showing at a time. I use 3, its all that fits conmfortably at 1024x768 resolution, and it lets me do all my crafting.
Enjoy
