I just started playing EQI a couple months ago. I'm a lvl 25 Magician. I want to check out EQII. My question is, does the conjurer in EQII have the same spell research problems or does that not exist in the sequel? If you've played both games, which do you like best?
I've played a EQ1 Mage to 34, and have the current EQ2 Conjurer at 42.
The spell system in EQ2 is different. When you gain a level, you automatically gain the new spell - it is ready for immediate use. No need to make a trip to the vendor, or say, "Hold a sec, memming new spell".
Spells are broken up into different abilities that can be upgraded:
-
Apprentice I-IV: Weakest, starting level, and player-made. App 2's are also for sale at the merchant.
-
Adept I-III: More powerful. Adept I's are loot drops, Adept II's are periodic level trait picks, Adept III's are player made (and most expensive, requires a rare component).
-
Master: Best. Crazy-rare loot drops or periodic level racial picks.
Example: You have a level 1 spell, Lightning Burst - Apprentice 1. While adventuring, you find a loot drop book of Lightning Burst - Adept 1. You open your inventory, right click the Adept 1 book, select "Scribe". You now have Lightning Burst - Adept 1 as a spell ready for use.
You will start with all Apprentice I spells. When you gain a level you will get the new spell, Apprentice I. You can either learn tradeskilling and craft your own spell upgrades, or buy them from another player at the broker. I've found it much faster to just buy the upgrades, as Tradeskilling was not my bag, baby.
Keep in mind that the EQ2 spell lines have very few "utility" spells. The Mage spell line in EQ2 is pretty much DD, DoT, root/stun/slow, de/buff, pet. It's kind of a let down, as in EQ1 1 always enjoyed summoning the pet, buffing, and equiping it with armor and weapons. I was also able to summon things that other players needed (arrows, bandages, armor/weapons, etc).
You will find that Conjurers are more like EQ1 Druids with DoT's, but no player heals. EQ2 Wizards/Warlocks have the big nukes.
I've upgraded all my spells to Adept 1, and my pet is upgraded to Adept 3. Cost me 78 gold but it was worth it.
Note: economy in EQ2 is very different. Expect to have little money in the bank. But you can quest for armor, weapons, items, and money.

Tradeskill and crafting.
Not going to go into the deep details of the games, there're many posts in the main forum here. One point: since health/mana regen in EQ2 is so much faster, you have a lot less downtime. No need to sit for 10 minutes while you heal at a snails pace. EQ2 regen rate puts you at full in a minute or two. Faster with high quality food/drink and buffs.
You will have more time adventuring and less time sitting.
