The only problem with choosing a trade based on what you need to make for yourself is that unless you can keep your crafting level way ahead of your adventuring level, you won't ever make much that you can really use!
I'll explain using my own character as an example...
I play a 22 warden / 23 tailor. I chose to go tailor in no small part so that I could make my own leather armor. The problem is that at level 22 I am now ready for the tier 3 "boiled leather" armor, (it has just become orange to me), but can only make the first 2 pieces. The recipes for the other four pieces will drift in gradually over the next 4 levels.
Since my tier 2 "tanned leather" gear is already blue to me, I want to change over as soon as possible. I just don't fancy getting smacked around by every mob in Thundering Steppes, and it will take way too long if I have to wait till I can craft the armor for myself!
Seems kind of silly for a tailor to buy tailored goods but I guess that's just the way it goes!
