...and while you are out in your pick-up groups, see who has a guild tag and ask them about their guild. Here are some things to ask:
- What are the goals of the guild? (Raid, casual, role-playing, family, etc. If you cuss like a sailor you would not want to be in a family guild, nor would they want you.)
- Any meetings or events? Any madatory?
- Does the guild have a web site with active forums? (go check out their web site before joining. Review the forums.)
- How many members?
- What's the level range? (if everyone is 45+, it may be hard to find group mates)
- What is the main time zone of the members? (If you are in New York, it would not be good to join a mainly Austrailian guild that is asleep when you are on, and vice-versa)
- What kind of Artisans?
- Do guild Artisans support guild members with discounted or free items? (They should)
- Are they recruiting?
As you can see, being in a guild is more than just having a guild tag above your head. Joining a guild that ends up not supporting you or never seems to be around can be frustrating.
Also keep in mind that a large number of members will mean more people on, but may not indicate a quality and organized guild. Too many times I've heard, "/shout Want to join a guild? Defenders of the Cupcake recruiting everyone, PST!"
Good guild almost never advertise they are looking for members.
Guild members will also observe your play style and attitude to see if it mesh's with their guild. You do not have to be a veteran, but you need to be alert, know your skills, and be polite. Immaturity and flaming will turn off any recruiters. TALKING IN ALL CAPS and shouting all the time is just as bad. Cool-heads, smart play, and a sense of humor will attract recruiters.
Just like fish in the sea, there are as many guilds. So be selective in which you join. You'll be glad you were.
Good Luck!
