Nope it's quite different. The best thing is that your gear always stays with you, no more naked CR.
Also you don't lose actual exp when you die, you accumulate exp debt which shows as red on your bar and has to be paid off out of exp earned as you go forward. If someone in your group dies, you all share in the debt.
When you die, a box pops up over your corpse giving you the option to revive or wait get rezzed on the spot. All healer classes can rez. They can also summon items which allow any player to rez once per summoned item. I think pallies can rez at higher levels also.
If you choose to revive, you'll zone back to a safe spot with all your gear intact. Then you get a wisp (magical vapour trail) which leads you back to your shard (spirit) on the ground where you died. You click to reabsorb it and some of your exp debt is paid off.
Also each time you die, your equipment takes 10% damage. If you let it go right down to 100% (10 deaths), it would no longer protect you. You need to pay a visit to a mender NPC who repairs it for you at a cost.
