EQ2 does have some problems, but it's still fun. I don't know if they fixed anything from EQ1 as I haven't played it. FFXI is fun too. Somethings you may want to keep in mind when choosing one or the other:
1. What type of game do you want? Do you want PvP? Are you willing to only play PvE? EQ2, currently and probably for a long time, does not have PvP. FFXI, there's something called Ballista that you can do.
2. What kind of player are you? Do you enjoy soloing sometimes and grouping when you feel like it? FFXI is very restrictive when it comes to soloing. EQ2 offers a greater range of soloability, but it still has a few issues.
3. What style of player are you? Do you enjoy Roleplaying? If you do, then EQ2 would be a better choice. FFXI as far as I have seen, contain very few players who roleplay. I rp about half the time I'm in FFXI but I rp 100% of the time I'm in EQ2.
4. Are you willing to settle for imperfection? Even though FFXI still can't be considered "perfect", it does have most of its wrinkles smoothed out. EQ2 is only a couple months old and as such, the economy hasn't settled, issues are still being resolved, many changes are ocurring almost, if not, weekly.
